Southern superstar Mammootty appears to be hurt by reports that say he "slapped" a fan while taking part in a promo of his latest film, Roudram, at Malappuram last week.

"Will I do such a thing?" Mammootty asked.

"I could sense that the passion was running high when I arrived for the promo because my new film was running in several theatres across north Kerala. The fans were excited to see me and for me, fans mean everything. Seeing the mood and the fervour of my fans, I opened the roof of my car and stood up," Mammootty recalled.

"As soon as I stood up, fans rushed to my moving car and wanted to touch me. Isn't it a natural thing to happen? Stars are often mobbed. But soon I noticed that things were moving out of control and people were coming closer to my car. I was really concerned about the safety of those who were near my car and I started warning them," Mammootty said.

The organisers of the promotional clip, the Malappuram district wing of All Kerala Mammootty Fans' Association, in a statement said their superstar sensed that the crowd in their frenzy to touch him came so close to the vehicle that he had to warn them to keep a safe distance, out of concern for their safety.

Roudram has been hogging headlines ever since shooting began last year because it featured Mammootty as a cop for the 25th time in his 30-year-old career in movies.

The moving is doing well at the box office and is on its way to becoming yet another hit, for the hardworking superstar who continues to be the "numero uno" in the Malayalam film industry.

Renjith is planning to make a sequel to one of his earlier films, but in the scripts of another big name in Malayalam - Renji Panikkar. The giants in the scriptwriting field is planning to come together to make a film on the character of Nanda Gopal Maarar, the guest role that Mammootty did in the super hit Mohanlal film ‘Narasimham‘. As per the initials details, Renji Panikkar who did a story based on this character, told about this to Renjith, the original scripter of ‘Narasimham‘.

Renjith who got interested in the storylines immediately agreed to direct the film. The film will be an investigative thriller, which will start its shooting after the completion of the full scripts.

Mammooty has been encouraging new talents in the film world by giving his dates to new filmmakers. Sneha to play heroine in Mammootty’s comeback Tamil film

Sneha captivated the Malayalam cinema fans with her scintillating smile in the film ‘Thuruppu Gulan’.

And her sparkling onscreen chemistry with megastar Mammootty in that film was one of the highpoints of Thuruppu Gulan .

Now, the grapevine is abuzz that Sneha has been signed up to play Mammootty’s heroine in his comeback film in Tamil.

Mammootty’s last release in Tamil was Junior Senior. Now the actor returns to Tamil films with his Tamil movie Vande Matharam, which will be released in Tamil Nadu and Kerala simultaneously. Mayavi, the super hit film directed by Shafi is continuing its wonder run, but now in the B class theatres. The film has celebrated 100 days in major centres, a month ago and was acknowledged as the first super hit of the year.

As the Vishu flicks took over major release centres by Vishu, the film which was in its winning stride was pushed off to many B class centres. But the film is repeating the collections, exactly as it has made in the class centres.

In almost every second centres, the film ran for more than four weeks. The film is running to 65 days in a centre, where the film has already managed a share of more than 3 lakhs.

The film has completed a 50 days in another center at Thrippunithura, in the five kilometer radius from Ernakulam city. The film is expected to make more than 20 crores revenue from the overall run in the state.

Mammootty's Mission 90 Days preview

Mammootty plays Major Sivaraman, a National Security Guard (NSG) officer, in Major Ravi’s ‘Mission 90 Days’. Major Ravi was the one who searched down Sivarasan, one of the main convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, and killed him. So this film will give first-ever, in-depth information about the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. It will be a big challenge for Major Ravi because expectations are sky high after ‘Keerthichakra’.

Shooting of the film started by mid-April and is planned as a 40 days at a stretch schedule. The film will be released on 6th of July. It is being shot at Kochi, Chennai and Bangalore.

The film tells the story of Major Sivaraman, the special officer in charge of the investigation of Rajiv Gandhi assassination. They track down the convicts in 90 days, thus the title. The film not only deal with the nail-biting investigation and the final showdown with Sivarasan, it also shows the emotional turmoil that the team went through during the period.

One of the interesting thing they have used real names for the characters in the movie. They haven’t changed the names of Rajiv Gandhi, Sivarasan, Nalini, Thanu etc

Tulip Joshi, a North Indian actress is also playing an important role in the film, which also has Lalu Alex, Kalabhavan Mani, Sai Kumar, Innocent, Kiran Raj and Baburaj among others. Cochin Haneefa plays a NSG doctor, who is specially trained to rescue convicts trying to suicide using cyanide, and to give medical assistance to the squad. Apart from Mammootty, the special squad consists of Jolly, Dennis, Shyam and Anil. Like Major Ravi, Anil was also in original NSG squad that hunted down Sivarasan. Shyam is a popular VJ of Kiran TV. Kiran Raj plays a CBI officer and Lalu Alex a DIG.

Major Ravi who has also written the script says it will give inside account on the Rajiv Gandhi assassination investigation. But the director has clarified that the movie will not discuss any historical or political issues regarding the assassination. Thiru is the cameraman of this racy thriller being made by Sasi Ainchira for Sri Utrithati films. The film is scheduled to release in the first week of July.

Mammootty's Balram v/s Tharadas Images

Balram Vs Tharadas is a big disappointment, if you consider the stature that both the characters Balram and Tharadas enjoy in the minds of the viewers.

It is not such a bad movie, but everyone from average viewer to extreme critic would only review it keeping in mind the hype that this movie created, thus their verdict would not go beyond the average mark. The stupendous opening that it got might help it get the break-even status.

A box containing arms was found hidden in a college construction site and DYSP Balram is instructed to take up the case. He soon finds through his investigation that it belong to Tharadas, an international criminal. He soon realize that Kerala’s top politicians and police officials are mere puppets of Tharadas and he stood no chance of catching this international don, unless he does something out of bounds.

So he arrests Tharadas’s love of life, actress Supriya (Katrina Kaif), under the charge of keeping weapons. He imprisons her and made sure that Tharadas’s marionette politicians can’t get her out, so that Tharadas himself would come for her rescue. Indeed, Tharadas comes, but didn’t fell prey to Balram’s trap. He manages to rescue his beloved but had more pressing matters to deal with than Balram, when his own men started back stabbing him.

Most of the second half is a cat and mouse game where Balram is hell bent on catching Tharadas and Tharadas having a hard time, with his side-kicks all set to finish him off. In the end Tharadas gets back to them and has a changeover.

It is perhaps for the first time that two characters from different films come together for a film directed by the same director. I.V Sasi and team succeeded, to some extend in bringing to life the changes that might have occurred to both the characters, over the years. Balram, as he is DYSP now, has matured a lot and loses his temper a lot less often than he used to as Inspector. On the other hand Tharadas predictably has broadened his horizon worldwide.

Everyone associated with the movie were so intimidated by the characters that they grossed out with their creative mind. Taking on even one of these characters would have been a gargantuan task; I.V Sasi-T.Damodaran-S.N.Swamy team took on the two of them.

To cut the story short— they dug their own grave, or at least that of IV Sasi’s. Never will anyone entrust him with a big project. They say it was Mammotty who insisted on adding Tharadas in to the story and also the one who paneled the songs. Hmm...no comments. Mammotty had a difficult job, playing two characters from two different movies. Balram was a success but can’t say the same about Tharadas.

Except for the vaguely hummable ‘Mathapove…’ all the songs were bad. And their visuals were even worse. The camerawork was pretty decent. Katrina really looked out of place, but beautiful nevertheless. Siddique, Mukesh and Rajmohan Unnithan were the notable performers. The comedy track with Jagadeesh and Kalpana was little more than ordinary.

Mammootty in a cross-over film

Mammootty will be part of a cross-over film which would be shot in a span of just 20 days at Mahabalipuram. Mammootty had hogged limelight recently being part of Ambedkar.

His portrayal was so convincing that he won the National Award for the film. The actor is now getting ready to star in another off-beat film called 'The Late Night Beggar', in which Mammootty plays the role of a doctor.

Nasraani shifted

This was to happen as Mammootty, as never before was running between four films at a time. And for the first time in his last four years, his planning is going haywire. His Onam film Nasraani according to his earlier schedules was to start next month.

But now, the film will start late and will be postponed for a further release date. Orekadal will be his immediate release which will hit the theatres by July 12. Mission 90 days, the action thriller by Major Ravi, will now become his Onam release.

Apart from this film, Mammootty is presently on the sets of magnum opus Pazhassi Raja which will be completed only with a shoot for another 65 days.

Mammootty has also started working for his bilingual Vande Matharam directed by debutante Karthi. Apart from these he has also earmarked his five days to appear for a cross over experimental film by debutante S Karthik.

Singing paeans of Pazhassi Raja

M T Vasudevan Nair and Hariharan have commenced work for Pazhassi Raja featuring Mammootty in the role of a freedom fighter.

Hariharan says, “We felt that Pazhassi Raja had not got the recognition he deserved, especially outside Kerala, for his contribution to the freedom movement”.

'The 1857 Sepoy Mutiny is considered the first freedom fight, but Pazhassi Raja fought the British 50 years before that, in the jungles of Wayanad. My film is about how he fights the British by organizing a tribal force in Wayanad and how he gives up his life for the cause”.

Kanika plays Pazhassi's wife and Padmapriya plays the other major female role in the film.

Probably that desire started with the first movie he saw. Not just as a whim, but a burning desire to be a megastar. For which he prayed intensely.

What sort of an actor does he want to be remembered as? Does he think an actor can induce change in society? Yes he can. That is his belief. Yes a good actor can bring about some changes in society, inducing the people to rethink their attitude, lifestyle or the whole of society itself.

But Mammootty thinks he has not reached that stage yet. Mammootty the responsibility of an actor is much more than that of a film director, writer, screen writer or a politician. An actor's only tool is his talent for acting.

The actor lives the fiery moments of life of a citizen on screen. And the audience may role-model the character thus presented. Hence a little thoughtlessness can spoil not just the acting but the life of the gullible masses. So Mammootty great care with every role of his.

How did Mammootty into cinema? Both M.T. Vasudevan Nair and K.G. George have to be seen as his mentors. MT discovered him while KG brought him up. Mammootty profound respect for both of them in his mind even today. Mammootty feels indebted and grateful to both of them.

Mammootty As "Gulan Kunjumon"

When it comes to the movie ‘Thuruppu Gulan’, it is all about Mammootty and you can either absolutely love him in it or hate him! Even the best of his fans would agree that he was over the top in some scenes but his worst critic would agree he was excellent in other. In general, the film evokes a mixed feeling in you.

Kunjumon (Mammootty) is the son of Kochuthoma (Innocent), who runs a Thattukada at Cochin. Kochuthoma sends his son to a friend at Kozhikode because Kunjomon has caused too much problem at Kochi, even as a kid. But kid grew up to become the very person Kochuthoma has dreaded.

Kunjumon (Mammootty), popularly known as Gulan, for his skill at playing cards, became rich by gambling and has scores of Tattukada’s at Kozhikode. He is feared by all and has all the high connections. Kochuthoma has problems with the owners of Raj Palace, a five star hotel beside his thattukada, and Kunjumon (Mammootty)rushes to his aid.

Earlier, the real owner of Raj Palace Menon (Devan), who was friends with Kochuthoma had moved to Singapore with his family to pursue business, leaving Raj Palace under the care of his trusted companion Sreedharan Unnithan (Kalashala Babu), but was cheated by him. He lost everything he earned in Singapore and was jailed by the dirty games played by Sreedharan Unnithan and his sons. Only way for his daughter Lakshmi (Sneha) to release him was to raise 10 crore rupees. She finds solace in Kochuthoma and Kunjumon. The rest of the story is how Kunjumon helps her release her father and how he sweep away the bad guys.

There is a big dilemma when it comes to commenting on Mammotty’s performance— u can call it good and grouchy— all at the same time. If only they hadn’t gone over the top in some scenes and had gone for milder jokes as in ‘Rajamanikyam’, then the whole scenario would have been different. The attempt was clearly to top what ‘Rajamanikyam’ did. It is hard to see a person doing all the crude jokes, a person who had maintained a macho image all through his career. But he is so funny in some scenes that you will forget who he is. In the end that is what saved the film.

Director Johnny Antony has nothing new to offer to the no-brainer written by Sibi.K.Thomas - Udaya Krishna. The supporting cast which includes loads of comic actors was reduced to mere spectators as Mammootty towers over the screen space. Alex Paul’s music was disappointing and it is better not to mention the lyrics, at all.

Mammootty As "Vavachy"

On the surface, ‘Pothanvava’ looks like a slick film, very fast paced and hilarious, but it suffers from one-upmanship of Mammootty that ultimately detracts from its theme and messes up the already weak scripted movie. It is also one of those rare films that director Joshi failed to make an impact.

Pothenvava (Mammootty) is the son of Mariamma Vakkeel (Usha Uthup). His name is Vava but people nicknamed him Pothenvava, because he is rather stupid and carries out all the orders that his mother gives. His father Vishnu Narayanan Namboothiri (Nedumudi Venu), who is a Brahmin, divorced his mother, when their families had fights on choosing religion for Vava (Mammootty) . Mariamma Vakkeel won the custody of her son but she chose not to have him any religion. This caused problems in Vava’s life as he couldn’t go to school without belonging to any religion. Thus Vava (Mammootty) ended up an illiterate.

Mariamma Vakkeel represents the Vaddakkeyangaadi, who are in conflict with the Thekkeyangaadi, lead by Pulikkattil Vakkachan (Rajan P Dev) and sons Anto and Paul(Spadikam George and Manianpilla Raju), as to who will conduct the Palli Perunnal.

Mariamma Vakkeel wins the battle but Pulikkattil family objects to Vava heading the festival as he is not baptized and thus not a Christian. Vava (Mammootty) decides to get baptized but his mother tells him to ask his father’s permission first. Thus Vava (Mammootty) set out to meet his father. With fate playing its part, he meets his father for the first time while rescuing him from an accident.

It turned out Vishnu Narayanan Namboothiri was very keen on meeting his son and father and son bonded instantly. Vava (Mammootty) then tries to reunite his parents and succeeds in it for some period. But the Villain in their life had other plans.

Neither Mammootty nor Joshi seemed to care about the plot’s weaknesses. But rather they tried to bank on the success of dialect that Mammootty successfully used in ‘Thuruppugulan’. Only saving grace is Bijukuttan (Manikandan), enacting the role of Marambal. Even though it is his first full-fledged role in a film, he has adapted to the big screen quite effortlessly.

It is Joshi’s trademark hurried narrative that will keep you from excruciated by the story, which was written solely to suite Mammootty’s new comic streak. ‘Pothanvava’, coming after ‘Chandupottu’, is perhaps the worst script written by Benny P Nayarambalam. Most of Benny’s hits had been successful adaptations of his own plays. Songs by Alex Paul is good in patches.

In totality, the film didn’t feature anything to write home about, but it won’t make you sick either.

Mammootty continues his winning streak with Rajamanikyam. The latest offering from Valiyaveettil Movie International is directed by debutant Anwar Rasheed and produced by Siraj Valiyaveettil. The film is running to packed houses in all the centers. Industry grapevine predicts the film will make the best initial collection record for the year. After Thaskaraveeran, this is the first Mammootty starrer with high comic content for the lead role, and he does it with great style. His dialogue delivery and intonation put even the best mimicry artists to shame.

Rajamanikyam tells the story of Bellary Raja who is disowned by his own mother to facilitate her marriage to another man. Raja is a loner, thirsting for love and affection. After long years the step-father himself, recalls Raja to settle disputes between his own wards for property shares. The step father (played by Saikumar), is framed, jailed and murdered. He leaves a will, which makes Raja the care taker of the properties that are to be returned to their actual heirs in course of time. How he manages the properties and resolves the murder mysteries makes content of this hilarious movie.

Rajamanikyam is the maiden directorial offering from Anwar Rasheed who has been associate to a handful of leading Malayalam directors. The movie has fast and peppy numbers penned by Gireesh Puthenchery, put to music by Alex Paul. The star cast includes, Mammootty, Rehman, Manoj K Jayan, Cochin Haneefa, Salim Kumar, Bhiman Raghu, Sindhu Menon and Padma Priya. The story and screenplay are by T.A. Shahid, whose last offering was Ben Johnson. Sanjeev Shankar cranks the camera well, brilliantly capturing the essence of Pollachi. The film contains an ample dose of humour, sentiments, action and songs, and stellar performances by the lead artists, making it worth one's time and money.
